Fourth Graders Weigh in on Content-Area Learning

The students in Brenda Shelton's fourth-grade class were asked to answer the question, "What are your thoughts about learning social studies?" Here are some of their responses. (To find out more about reading in the content area of social studies, see Brenda Shelton's article in this issue.)

My thoughts about learning social studies is that it's fun because you get to learn about the Native Americans and other people who lived in the past. Social studies is easy for me because I pay attention and I do my best. I don't have a lot of trouble when I write something about social studies. Social studies is interesting because geologists find artifacts from the past. Social studies is a great subject because there are famous people who lived long ago.

Social studies is fun for me because I get to draw and write. We are learning about Native Americans in social studies right now. We are learning the names of the tribes. We write sentences about the tribes. Then we draw what the tribes made. For instance, one tribe made dolls, another tribe made purses. Those are my thoughts about social studies.

Social studies is fun and interesting for me. When I am in social studies, I am having fun working and learning new things. My teacher teaches us about Ohio's history. At this point in social studies, we are learning about Ohio's Native Americans. In social studies we do a lot of writing and drawing.
