Vocabulary: The Key to Improving Comprehension
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This resource describes two activities for helping students to learn unfamiliar words so they can comprehend texts more fully. The mini-lessons, designed for primary and intermediate classrooms, encourage students to make connections between what they know about words and what they need to know in order to understand texts better. A sample outline for a vocabulary recording sheet is included at the site and can easily be adapted to create vocabulary charts for use with a variety of texts. (author/ncl)

CAREER APPLICATION

The two practical, practice-oriented activities, created by an 8th grade teacher, are useful for teaching vocabulary in the classroom. This resource is especially helpful to students who are struggling with comprehension. Links to additional activities, resources, and nonfiction writing make this resource far richer than the one-page vocabulary activity might suggest.
