After two years of intensive data gathering, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel has issued recommendations for the improvement of mathematics education in the United States in its final report, Foundations for Success. Recommendations encompass curriculum, instruction, assessment, the balance between conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, teacher preparation, and research. ORC has worked with teachers and teacher educators from all over Ohio to develop pacing guides for the ODE Mathematics Program Models, six (6) different sequences of courses that take an applications, integrated, or thematic approach to the high school mathematics curriculum. The ORC Pacing Guides include a schedule of topics, teaching tips, links to best practice lessons, and rich problems to engage students in exploration, analysis, and application of Big Ideas in mathematics (see Model A Pacing Guide for a sample). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has scheduled one of their regional meetings for 2008 to be held in Cleveland, Ohio, October 16-17. The Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) will hold their annual meeting for 2008 in conjunction with the NCTM regional meeting. Mark your calendar and plan to attend! Better yet, go to the OCTM conference webpage and volunteer to help on the planning committee. There's more than enough work to go around!
