Using Learning Conductor
Individual Math Refresher and Tutorial
An Ohio worker laid off from a manufacturing job needs a refresher course in math
in order to return to college. He learns about the Learning Conductor lessons on
the Ohio Resource Center web site and logs on to the online skills test to find out
how much he remembers and what areas he needs to study. The test links him to the
Learning Conductor lessons that will help him brush up and prepare for retooling his
career.
Middle School Classroom
An Ohio middle school teacher uses individual Learning Conductor lessons with her
students to reinforce the algebra concepts that she teaches. Because the lessons are
based on Ohio Standards, she can be sure that when she identifies the appropriate
standard, the lesson linked to it will be what she needs. When a student has
difficulty with a concept, the teacher logs on to the computer in her classroom
linked to the Internet and locates the appropriate Learning Conductor lesson through
the Ohio Resource Center website
(http://www.ohiorc.org/for/math/learningconductor/lessons.aspx).
The student works through the lesson, using the interactive tools, testing his
understanding, and hearing as well as seeing the lesson. Through Learning
Conductor, this teacher is able to provide the individual help her students need.
High School Classroom
An Ohio high school geometry teacher with a projector and Internet connection in his
classroom uses Learning Conductor interactive tools to illustrate geometry for his
class. The tools help him demonstrate concepts that were difficult for students to
picture in the past. He also arranges to have students work individually with the
lessons, particularly those students who find the audio version of the lessons
helpful.
Community College Student
A student in an Ohio community college is taking a basic algebra class and having
trouble understanding the concepts and keeping up with her class. Her professor told
her about Learning Conductor lessons on the ORC website, so she is able to log in to
the individual lessons and get the extra practice that she needs. As her confidence
improves, so do her test scores.
High School Algebra Teacher
An Ohio high school algebra teacher is using the full suite of Learning Conductor tools
to conduct her class. With the package running on the district's server, she has
installed software in the computer lab that allows her and her students to use all
facets of Learning Conductor. They can turn in their homework electronically; she can
post comments to the students through electronic "sticky notes;" and she can add new
homework questions as needed from the homework library. She is able to keep track of
student progress through the electronic grade book, and to monitor student performance
while her students move at their own pace through the Learning Conductor lessons.
Inservice Teacher Course
A university faculty member has Learning Conductor software available on her department
server to use for her summer course for inservice special education teachers. The special
education teachers need to refresh their math skills to meet the NCLB requirements for
highly qualified teachers. Using Learning Conductor, the faculty member is able to
provide the teachers with a self-paced program and to monitor their progress through the
course. The teachers are able to install the software they need at home to allow them to
work off-site. The faculty member has modified the course, adding some additional
lessons and homework, to meet the teachers' needs.
Ohio Mathematics Learning Conductor, created by the Distributed Learning Workshop and
supported by the Ohio Resource Center
(http://www.ohiorc.org/) and the Ohio Board of Regents
(http://regents.ohio.gov/), is available free to
all students and educators in Ohio.
