Overview:
There is something for every literacy leader at the two-day Ohio Literacy Institute!
- Participate in sessions that explore timely literacy issues and topics across grades and content areas.
- Learn valuable strategies that can enhance instruction and student achievement in your school or district.
- Listen to renowned authors of children’s and young adult literature at a special Ohio authors luncheon, and have them autograph books available for purchase (or bring your own!).
- Discover Ohio-based educational resources that are available to enhance your practice.

How to Register:
Print out the
OLI Registration Form (in PDF format) and complete it. Mail the completed form with your payment to the Ohio Resource Center no later than May 30, 2008.
Acceptable forms of payment include checks, money orders, and purchase orders only. Checks and money orders should be made payable to the Ohio Literacy Institute. If paying with a purchase order, the PO number must be indicated on the registration form.
PAYMENT MUST BE INCLUDED WITH THE REGISTRATION FORM. Registration forms received without payment will not be processed until payment is received.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Tim Best leads MATRIX Learning, a federal Star Schools grant with partners in California, Kansas, New Mexico, and Ohio for the Ohio Board of Regents. He recently directed catalystOHIO, a collaboration of fifty universities in Ohio that designed and delivered professional development in technology to more than 2,500 professors in Ohio’s public and private institutions of higher education.

Dr. Nell Duke is an associate professor and associate director of the Literacy Achievement Research Center at Michigan State University. She is also the co-author of Reading and Writing Informational Text in the Primary Grades: Research-Based Practices, Literacy and the Youngest Learner: Best Practices for Educators of Children from Birth to Five, and Beyond Bedtime Stories: A Parent’s Guide to Promoting Reading, Writing, and Other Literacy Skills from Birth to 5.

Dr. Judith Irvin is a professor at Florida State University and executive director of the National Literacy Project. She is also the co-author of Taking Action: A Leadership Model for Improving Adolescent Literacy, Reading and the High School Student: Strategies to Enhance Literacy, and Strategies for Enhancing Literacy and Learning in Middle School Content Area Classrooms. |

Dr. Mel Riddile, the 2006 National High School Principal of the Year and the 2005 Virginia High School Principal of the Year, is the principal of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. At the time of the awards, he was the principal of J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia.

Ohio Authors Luncheon:
Celebrate literacy during lunch on June 17 with four award-winning Ohio authors of children’s and young adult literature! Featured authors are:
- Jaime Adoff, author of Jimi & Me, The Song Shoots out of My Mouth, and Names Will Never Hurt Me
- Chad Bender, co-author/illustrator of Ribbit!
- Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin, author of My Name Is Bilal and The Best Eid Ever
- Shelley Pearsall, author of All of the Above and Trouble Don’t Last
Each author will give a short presentation and will be available for book signing afterward. The authors will participate in an afternoon concurrent session on June 17 to answer questions and discuss literacy and their works in more depth.
Ohio-Based Projects and Resources:
Acquaint – or reacquaint – yourself with the unique projects and resources offered by a selected group of Ohio’s nonprofit organizations. Visit their exhibits on Monday, June 16, and learn about special resources and professional development opportunities for educators.

- e-Read Ohio – A division of the Reading First-Ohio Center, e-Read Ohio is a collection of e-learning resources committed to reading excellence for educators and parents.
- INFOhio – INFOhio, a statewide cooperative school library and information network, supports and enriches teaching and learning by providing equitable access to quality resources for Ohio's PreK-12 community of students, educators, and parents.
- Mazza Museum: International Art from Picture Books – Located at the University of Findlay, the Mazza Museum is the world's first and largest teaching museum devoted to literacy and the art of children's picture books.
- Ohio Center for Law-Related Education – The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (OCLRE) offers numerous civics programs for students and teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, including mock trials, conferences, summer camps, educational instruction, and social awareness programs.
- Ohio Historical Society: Ohio History Teachers – The Ohio History Teachers program offers many educational resources, including distance learning, History Day, field trips, education kits, and more in support of history instruction.
- Ohio Social Studies Resource Center – The Ohio Social Studies Resource Center (OSSRC) is dedicated to enhancing the teaching and learning of social studies in Ohio through the identification and posting of quality web-based resources that promote teaching best practices.
- Ohio Resource Center: Adolescent Literacy Project – Advancing Adolescent Literacy Instruction Together, also known as Project AdLIT, consists of peer-reviewed, web-based resources as well as an online journal and professional development support to assist Ohio’s educators with reading and writing instruction across the content areas for students in grades 6-12.
- Ohio Resource Center: Resources for Early Childhood Project – The Resources for Early Childhood (REC) project seeks to support Ohio's early childhood teachers, parents, teachers of early childhood teachers, and children by providing peer-reviewed, web-based resources including best practice briefs, recommended reading lists, educational games, and much more.
