Oil Spill Lessons and Activities

For lessons and activities that focus on the properties of water and oil, try:

Water Density. Compare the densities of several different salt-water solutions.

What's More Dense? Compare the density of oil, water, and other materials.

Sink or Float (ORC #3557). Determine whether various objects sink or float in water. Think about adding oil as a test substance.

Water Filter. Explore the use of a filter to clean dirty water.

Testing Water's Skin (ORC #4884). Add as many drops of water to a penny as possible.

Making Mousse. Examine what happens when oil and water are mixed.
