A Trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame: Writing a Persuasive Letter
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Created by a high school English teacher, this lesson plan is designed to teach high school students some of the basic research skills needed to find information using the internet. The goal of the lesson is to use the Internet to review and gather information and to analyze the techniques used to persuade internet users. Centered around the theme of baseball, the activities include researching the Baseball Hall of Fame and writing a persuasive letter to a baseball coach. (author/ncl)

CAREER APPLICATION

This resource can be used by any career cluster because it teaches students how to write persuasive letters and use the Internet to conduct research. While the unit uses baseball as a unifying element, it is not a sports assignment. A teacher might select this resource when teaching students how to write letters or other business correspondence. To extend the lesson, an English language arts teacher who has students in any career-technical field could easily substitute that career field for baseball and use the assignment to help students write letters and business correspondence related to that particular field. Substituting the local art museum and art history for baseball and the Baseball Hall of Fame is an example of how to modify the lesson for a specific field.
