Professional Commentary

Ken Glassmeyer, a middle school language arts teacher in southwestern Ohio, shares his firsthand experience working to change the cultural climate of his school through literacy. Having survived a school shooting and hostage situation, Glassmeyer talks about the fact that the majority of his students "come from a culture where violence is considered an important value and literacy is rarely even a secondary consideration. Glassmeyer's vignette consists of his recounting incidents in which he used "before-, during-, and after-reading approaches" to give his students an alternative to violence. (author/ebm)
