Creating a Class Pattern Book With Popular Culture Characters
Best Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

In this lesson, students become familiar with the pattern book format using I Went Walking by Sue Williams. Next, they collaborate to create their own digital pattern book. Digital photographs of students' stuffed animals or toys representing favorite popular culture characters are taken in various locations around the school. Once the photographs have been stored on a computer, students participate in a shared writing session to create their digital storybook, which follows the pattern of the book they read at the start of the lesson. Lists of books featuring patterned text are available at the site. (author/sec)
