PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This phonemic awareness assessment is excerpted from Reading and Writing Grade by Grade: New Standards, National Center on Education and the Economy and the University of Pittsburgh (1998). It is designed to be given to young children up to three times during the school year. The assessment includes: 1) teacher dialogue with examples for the child, 2) the vocabulary used for assessment, and 3) a form to record and track progress. The concepts tested are: rhyming words, isolating initial consonants, isolating ending consonants, and blending separately spoken phonemes. (author/jlkrause)
