PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This simple self-assessment rubric is designed to be used by students who have been learning how to extract and summarize important information from a content area text. It can be given to students to guide them through writing a summary of the text, and also to assess their comprehension of the text. The summary is to be shared with a partner who is unfamiliar with the text. Together the student and their partner then evaluate the summary according to the rubric. The emphasis is on creating a summary that does not include extraneous details, but does include main ideas and relevant details. This rubric encourages students to understand the main ideas in a text, and then state their ideas simply in their own words. (author/jlkrause)
