Professional Commentary
The February 2008 issue of AdLIT's In Perspective focuses on linking language arts and social studies. The entire issue can be downloaded, and regular columns include the following: (1) featured article; (2) classroom vignettes; (3) student voices; (4) a look at the Ohio Graduation Test; (5) for your bookshelf; and (6) resources from the ORC collection. In this month's featured article, "Active Learning and Historically Based Young Adult Novels: Centerpieces for Integrating Literacy Instruction with Social Studies," teacher Linda J. Rice invites teachers to think about creating an integrated language arts and social studies curriculum based on drawing from both a generated list of questions she poses in her article as well as teachers' professional experience. Teachers will find in Rice's list of questions an excellent resource that they can use immediately in the classroom. The In Perspective columns that follow include strategies and insights for helping teachers integrate literacy, including tips on team teaching, active note-taking, ACOT, solo teaching, outlining, and essay writing. "A Look at the OGT" focuses on building students' literacy skills and responses to the OGT ("The Ohio Graduation Test in Social Studies"), and "For Your Bookshelf" provides reviews of books by Linda J. Rice, Laurel Schmidt, and Donna Ogle, Ron Klemp, and Bill McBride. (author/ebm)
