PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

The problem of counting the number of squares on a checkerboard is a classic investigation. This lesson begins with the embedded-square problem and offers several extensions. As students work through these problems, they should appreciate the importance of systematically organizing their data. This lesson plan was adapted from an article written by Timothy V. Craine that appeared in the October 1994 issue of Mathematics Teacher. Activity sheets and suggestions for assessment are included. (author/sw)
