This classroom vignette is an insightful piece written for the March '08 issue of AdLIT In Perspective detailing one teacher's experience with understanding reading strategies from a learner's point of view. Carol Van Zaligen, a National Board Certified teacher in early adolescent English Language Arts, shares a fun story where she becomes a learner (she signs ups for a physics class) in order to gain some understanding into her students' perspective when they have to deal with reading and writing about new material. Her conviction to teaching and understanding what students need to be critical and discriminating consumers of text underlies the story she tells. (author/ebm)
