Frankfurter High: Hot Dog Sales
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Students explore the problem of deciding how many hot dogs to buy for each home basketball game in the face of uncertain demand. This problem is representative of the general problem of managing perishable inventories. Activity sheets guide students through a simulation intended to assist with decision making. Homework problems and extension activities with all answers are also included. (sw/js)

CAREER APPLICATION

Marketing students and entrepreneurs in all career areas need to manage inventories. Four different scenarios are considered in this lesson: hot dog sales, airline reservations, fashion industry orders, and car rentals. Issues of perishability and disposal of unused items are explored and charted. Optional enhancements to examine the processes of inventory management include having students talk to a business manager using the suggested questions.
