Creative Communication Frames: Discovering Similarities Between Writing and Art
Best Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

In this lesson, students compare writing with art, specifically Impressionism. Students examine a work of art of their choice to discern purpose, audience, form and function. Their observations and reflections emphasize the use of transitional and comparative vocabulary to discuss similarities between writing and painting. Although this lesson compares the elements of Impressionism to the writing process, the activities could be adapted to any art form. Links to virtual art museums, interactive organizers and charts, and ideas for implementation are available at the website. (author/ncl)

CAREER APPLICATION

Arts & Communications and Human Resources students need to understand communication, and they also need to understand the link between writing and art. This site helps students reconnect with their creative/artistic roots and/or find them. A visit to a good metropolitan art museum is a must for the studentss who are targeted by this site. This site is geared toward middle school students, but won't need much adaptation for high school. Students who fulfill the requirements of a unit of which this site is a part, not only will fulfill their craving for visual art, but they will understand writing as a work of art, and how all art fits together.
