Professional Commentary
The content resource Producers, from the National Council on Economic Education, offers an attention grabbing, interactive, demonstration that defines the concept of producers in terms third graders can understand. Through words, an accompanying audio track, and cartoons, students are led to see how they and their family members are producers. At the end of the demonstration, the students are assessed in a brief, interactive manner that gives students immediate feedback to the questions they answer. The demonstration is not long, but its brevity and snappy presentation holds the interest of third grade students helping them to grasp the concept of what it means to be a producer more effectively than a longer presentation would. Due to the brevity and simplicity of the demonstration, the concept of being a producer is not explored in depth, but going deeper would be a good direction to head with a follow up classroom discussion or possibly with a presentation by a guest speaker.
