PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Students make estimates to analyze the number of apples per acre and visualize the magnitude of one million. Using the thematic setting of Johnny Appleseed, students have opportunities to practice their computation and estimation skills as they progress from guessing the number of apples in a bushel to making a reasonable estimate based on a point of reference or benchmark. Students use data from the Michigan Apple Growers to compute and analyze the total apple yield per acre. They use a grid to make better estimations. In addition to the lesson plan, the site includes ideas for teacher discussion, extensions of the lesson, and additional resources. The lesson plan is accompanied by video clips illustrating lesson procedures. The user should first locate the Apple a Day lesson and then access the appropriate video clips. (author/pk)
