PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

The prize for winning a radio contest provides the winner with up to $1,000,000 in cash. The catch is that the winner is only allowed one suitcase in which to carry away as much money as it will hold in $1 bills. Will this amount be more or less than the $1,000,000? Students devise plans to estimate the amount of money it will take to fill a given suitcase. Several problem solving strategies can be used to solve this problem. Please note that the website suggests this lesson for grades 6-8, but the activity better fits the standards for grades 3-7. In addition to the lesson plan, the site includes ideas for teacher discussion, extensions of the lesson, and additional resources. The lesson plan is accompanied by video clips illustrating lesson procedures. The user should first locate the Million Dollar Giveaway lesson and then access the appropriate video clips. (author/sw)
