Escaping Slavery: Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt
Best Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This interdisciplinary lesson integrates the teaching of literary elements with key events in American history. Following a read aloud, students create a problems/solutions/events chart to understand the relationships between problems faced by the main character, Clara, and how she solves them. To learn more about the Underground Railroad, students visit an interactive web site developed by National Geographic and "walk in the shoes" of an escaping slave. Other ideas, including links to related resources and story extensions, are available at the web site. (Author/ncl)
