PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This lesson asks students to investigate how animals get food during the winter months. Students read fiction and nonfiction books and access the Internet to gain information about how animals survive during the winter. They also use a K-W-L graphic organizer to activate prior knowledge and increase their understanding of the topic. Using their graphic organizers, students write and illustrate stories incorporating information they have gathered. Extension activities are also suggested, including writing poetry, building snowmen to feed animals, and doing art projects. (author/ncl)
