Students observe bleeding of colored inks with water. The task assesses students' abilities to make simple observations, their understanding of mixtures, and make generalized inferences from their observations. This task is designed to take students approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. This performance assessment is part of the PALS (Performance Assessment Links in Science) collection. (author/ts)

Ohio Science Academic Content Standards (2002)
Physical Sciences
Benchmarks (3–5)
A.
Compare the characteristics of simple physical and chemical changes.
B.
Identify and describe the physical properties of matter in its various states.
Grade Level Indicators (Grade 4)
1.
Identify characteristics of a simple physical change (e.g., heating or cooling can change water from one state to another and the change is reversible).
3.
Describe objects by the properties of the materials from which they are made and that these properties can be used to separate or sort a group of objects (e.g., paper, glass, plastic, metal).
Scientific Inquiry
Benchmarks (3–5)
B.
Organize and evaluate observations, measurements and other data to formulate inferences and conclusions.
Grade Level Indicators (Grade 3)
5.
Record and organize observations (e.g., journals, charts, tables).
Grade Level Indicators (Grade 5)
3.
Use evidence and observations to explain and communicate the results of investigations.
Scientific Ways of Knowing
Benchmarks (3–5)
C.
Explain the importance of keeping records of observations and investigations that are accurate and understandable.
Grade Level Indicators (Grade 4)
2.
Record the results and data from an investigation and make a reasonable explanation.
