PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This resource offers strategies for teaching the parts and functions of a newspaper. This instructional unit, maintained by the New Zealand Ministry of Education, integrates many reading and writing tasks based on parts of a newspaper. Students explore the language and structure of news stories and opinion pieces. Content support, assessment guidelines, and links to other internet resources are also available at the website. CAREER APPLICATION

Arts and communication students will benefit from engaging in a class exercise of creating a two-page newspaper. Students will learn and create various newspaper features; in addition, those in printing and publishing will gain experience in layout and publishing.
