Timelinescience: One Thousand Years of Scientific Thought
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Timelinescience is an interactive website that outlines major scientific breakthroughs of the last millennium. Each part of the time line covers a different period. The time between 1000 and 1600 is broken into periods spanning 100 years. The years 1600 to 1900 are broken into periods of 50 years, while the 20th century is covered in four blocks of 25 years each. Each time period provides information about the ideas and events of the time and provides details of important scientific ideas, people, events and inventions of the period. Each period also has a link to a page which provides a broader commentary on the events and ideas of the period. The "Mainly for Teachers" part of Timelinescience contains resources which link with people and events on the time line. The resources contain lots of useful information and a wide variety of activities which are targeted at different age ranges.

There are many potential instructional uses for this site. High school students could explore the historical development of major scientific theories in any of the science disciplines. Younger students could explore the contributions of specific scientists and discover that diverse groups of people have made significant contributions to science. The site also provides valuable content teachers could use to supplement lessons focusing on the history of science. (author/ts)

CAREER APPLICATION

This site can be a helpful reference for students and teachers in career fields involving biological, earth, physical, and chemical science. The site presents a timeline of scientific discoveries and can be used to explore the history of the development of scientific topics. The timeline information can support classroom discussion and student research on specific science topics. The career-technical instructor will want to look at the 'Mainly for Teachers' section to help understand how to connect the timeline to a specific classroom topic. (jrs)
