PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Students investigate the connection between geometric transformations and matrix multiplication. By entering the coordinates of the vertices of a geometric figure into a matrix and then multiplying by a 2x2 diagonal matrix, they analyze the correspondence between the multiplier matrix and the transformation it produces on the vertices of the figure. Students then formulate a general rule relating the elements of the multiplier matrix and the transformation it produces. (author/sw)
