Professional Commentary

This article summarizes the work published in the Handbook of Reading Research: Volume III (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000) coauthored by Allan Wigfield and John T. Guthrie and an article on the development of concept-oriented reading instruction for Educational Psychology Review (Guthrie & Cox, in press). In this resource, Guthrie discusses the importance of engaged reading and the benefits students experience through this process. Guthrie believes that engaged readers seek to understand; they enjoy learning and they believe in their reading abilities. Therefore, teachers must engages students in reading to promote better readers. The particular focus of this article is on motivational research and the difficulties surrounding it. Guthrie includes instructional examples for motivating students to foster reading engagement and motivation.(author/mcg)
