Cartesian Coordinate System
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

The applets at this site produce graphs from tables of data, from function equations, or both. Working with these applets provides students additional practice in connecting graphs with other forms of function representation. (sw)

CAREER APPLICATION

This lesson, designed to familiarize students to the Cartesian coordinate system, would be an excellent resource to acclimate Manufacturing machining students to the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine or Construction students to Auto CAD software. Multiple game-like applets are found in this lesson. The Coordinates Game allows the user to plot points on the coordinate plane and to read the coordinates of a point plotted by the computer. The Maze Game enables the user to practice point plotting skills by moving a robot through a mine field to a target location. Moves are accomplished by specifying the coordinates of the new location and order to win; the path must not cross a mine. The Simple Plot game allows the user to input a series of (x, y) ordered pairs and plot them either as a connected function or unconnected data points. (jrs)
