A Bear of a Poem: Composing and Performing Found Poetry
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

To add to students’ growing ways of looking at and listening to words, they “mine” texts for favorite words from favorite stories. Working together, students select key words and phrases from the text to create a collective class poem. The poem serves as the script for their performances. Although this lesson uses books from the Berenstain Bears series as an example, any children’s books or book series can be used to compose the found poems. (author/ncl)
