"What Choice Do I Have?" Reading, Writing, and Speaking Activities to Empower Students [excerpt]: Chapter 2, "Choice in Reading"
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

With the premise that "with good reading, anything is possible," and that reading is the "entry point to understanding ourselves, others, and the world in which we live," this chapter excerpt focuses on empowering students' reading by providing choice in reading, writing, and speaking activities. Activities for reading, writing, and speaking are explained and detailed for classroom use, and include how to prepare and use a reading contract, a reading memo, brain drawing, mandalas, and alternative book reports. Differentiated instruction is emphasized, too, as a means of making these reading strategies more effective. (author/bebrown)
