Adolescent Literacy In Perspective, October 2004, When Adolescents Can't and Won't Read
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This October 2004 issue of Adolescent Literacy In Perspective focuses on "When Adolescents Can't and Won't Read." This online, downloadable publication of the Ohio Resource Center features David Bloome's well-researched article, "Complex Human Activities Taking Place in Complex Human Relationships." The publication examines theme of adolescent reading through two shared classroom vignettes--"Working with Struggling Readers" by LeeAnn K. Binion and "Creating a Recipe for Reading Success" by Tammy Burt. Both articles include a glimpse inside a typical adolescent classroom where motivation, engagement, choice, and struggling readers all consume a teacher's energy. Both authors look beyond the limitations imposed by the problems to suggest solutions. Carol Brown Dodson continues to examine test preparation for the Ohio Graduation Test in her article, "Informational Text and Author's Purpose." Additionally, a list of helpful educational links to professional development sites is included. (author/ebm)

CAREER APPLICATION

This online publication will be useful to career-technical teachers seeking guidance about how to help students with reading assignments in their career field. The publication's professional articles provide specific examples of how to identify problems with reading, tips to motivate students who struggle with reading, and activities to help students become better readers. Identifying reading problems for struggling students and helping students get more from reading assignments are two things all teachers should be able and willing to do within the scope of career-technical classroom instruction.
