Held Accountable: Connecting Accounts from Slave Narratives to Historical Research
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

In this lesson, students read and discuss excerpts from two recently discovered slave narratives that describe their self emancipation prior to the end of the Civil War. Students then work in groups to research six themes addressed in the narratives, relating the personal accounts to history texts and other historical documentation. Suggested links are provided as possible sources for the research. Groups produce informative posters and present their findings to the class. As a reflection activity, students write an essay considering their own place in the greater history of their family or community. (author/sec)
