Research has shown that a set of characteristic attitudes and behaviors are key factors to success for persons with learning disabilities. Understanding and fostering these "success attributes" of self-awareness, proactivity, perseverance, goal-setting, support systems, and emotional coping strategies can assist a child with their ability to overcome a learning disability. Traditionally, researchers concentrated on academics. These attributes are more holistic, move beyond the boundaries of academics, and have proven to be important to the greater goal of fostering a positive life outcome for persons with learning disabilities. A parent and a teacher guide are both available online. These guides are designed with recommendations, checklists, and tips on how to recognize if a child has these attributes and also how to foster the development of such attributes. Lists also include related books, articles, curricula, movies and children's literature that address each of the attributes. Resources to support the learning disabled, as well as state and local affiliates are available. (author/jlkrause)
