Lonely as a Cloud: Using Poetry to Understand Similes
Best Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

In this best practice lesson, students experience the power of similes by creating two drawings of specific trees. The first is attempted before hearing a poem rich in similes describing the trees. The second is created after experiencing the poem. After identifying and discussing similes in a variety of poems, students use the graphic organizer provided as a prewriting tool for a simile poem of their own. Ideas for taking the poems through the entire writing process and links to poetry websites are provided. (sec)
