PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

Prepared by the Ontario Ministry of Education, this guide focuses on the literacy development of boys and provides practical and effective strategies for classroom use. The guide features a rich source of practices and strategies that have been used successfully in literacy programs  around the world. Although developed for educators in Ontario, Ohio educators can draw on this guide to create a stimulating and engaging learning environment for both boys and girls.

Thirteen Strategies for Success are used to organize the most important research on how boys learn to read and write and the most effective instructional approaches and strategies for helping boys to enjoy learning to read and write well. Other sections of the guide provide summaries of research and ideas for instruction. "Quick Facts" lists background information and research findings; "Try it now!" gives practical suggestions that can be implemented with relative ease; "Best Practices" suggests effective instructional strategies and approaches; and "Insight" features important findings about boys’ literacy development and literacy instruction.
