The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilites published two promising researched-based interventions for students with learning disabilities. The first article by Neil Sturomski examines the value of teaching students how to learn. Students can be taught how to use learning strategies to become more effective and independent learners. Good strategy instruction helps students understand the purposes for strategies and also how, why, and when they can be implemented. This knowledge helps students take control of their learning and have a sense of accomplishment. The second article, written by William Ellis, describes the importance phonological awareness has in the reading process. The value in understanding the letter/sound correspondence does not diminish as readers become more mature. The importance of solid teacher education in these two areas of strategy instruction and phonological awareness is imperative. There are no simple solutions to these complex problems, but teacher education in research-based theory and practice is critical. (author/jlkrause)
