Professional Commentary

In this lesson on characterization, students "become" one of the major characters in a book and describe themselves and other characters with lists of strong adjectives. When the lists are posted in class, peers try to identify the characters. Students can prepare to support their adjective lists by using an online interactive tool to supply actions for each character trait selected. Extensive lists of vivid adjectives and resources for teaching students about adjectives are available at the site. This lesson could be used during or after reading a novel or as a semester review with students being assigned different works. (author/sec)
