PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This classroom vignette from the November/December 2006 issue of Adolescent Literacy in Perspective offers teachers specific ways to involve students in both understanding and appreciating their mathematics textbooks. Author Diane K. Kahle, an experienced teacher (15 years) of middle school mathematics, shares general tips, small group and whole class ideas for textbook reading, and a ten-question scavenger hunt to help students learn how to find information in their mathematics textbook. Kahle discusses the dilemma in teaching from current-day textbooks that can overwhelm both teachers and students by the sheer volume of information. Brief and to the point, this article targets ways to make a mathematics textbook user-friendly for all involved. (author/ebm)
