Elie Wiesel: First Person
Promising Practice
PROFESSIONAL COMMENTARY

This lesson on Elie Wiesel, and his Holocaust memoir Night may be used with or without Ken Burns' PBS video Elie Wiesel: First Person Singular. It is divided into three activities. In “Activity One: Listening,” students “listen” to what Wiesel is saying as they keep a journal of their reactions while reading and discussing the book. In “Activity Two: Bearing Witness and Questioning Faith,” students write a poem, essay or story or create a work of art about an event they saw—or “witnessed”—in person. This helps them understand what it means to speak as a witness. They also consider Wiesel’s deeply religious upbringing, how it was affected by the Holocaust, and how it shaped his life as a witness. In “Activity Three: Making a Difference,” students research human rights activists or organizations that have made contributions to society. Finally, the students, themselves, make plans for projects they might undertake in their own communities to make a difference. After students have completed their projects individually or in small groups, they report back to the class on their experiences. Background information on the Holocaust, suggested readings, and links to additional resources are supplied throughout the lesson. (author/sec)
